How figures are sourced, how the calculators work, what is excluded, and how to read the verification status on each guide.

How figures are sourced and dated

Every guide page carries a last-checked stamp of 24 October 2026. Rent figures are ranges from the sources named on that page, because rent methods differ: a citywide median, a new-lease average, and an asking-rent median are not the same measure, and the pages say which is which. Tax bands are stated for the tax year named on the page, and the calculators do not compute tax from those bands. Instead, you enter your own effective tax rate, which is the honest input for a comparison that spans countries, filing statuses, and deductions. Exchange rates are the rate named on each page, editable in the calculator. If a figure has moved since 24 October 2026, the page is out of date until it is rechecked. That is the point of the stamp.

How the move calculator works

Take-home now equals current salary times one minus your current tax rate, divided by 12. Current cushion equals take-home now minus current rent minus current other costs. Preserved cushion equals the current cushion, or 0 if current costs exceed take-home, in which case the page warns you clearly. Estimated income required to preserve your current monthly spending cushion equals destination monthly costs in dollars plus preserved cushion, times 12, divided by one minus your destination tax rate. Destination costs are destination rent plus destination other costs, converted at the exchange rate you entered. Sensitivity shows the same calculation at destination costs 10 percent lower, at base, and 10 percent higher. Monthly expense difference equals current monthly costs minus destination monthly costs in dollars. A positive difference means destination costs are lower on these inputs. It is not actual savings, because tax, healthcare, transport, and lifestyle items are only partly in the fields.

If you enter a zero salary, a tax rate of 100 percent or more in the destination, a negative tax rate, a negative amount, or an exchange rate of zero or less, the page blanks the equivalent income and warns you, instead of showing a misleading finite salary. It never divides by zero.

How the trip calculator works

Trip total equals travellers times flights per person, plus room per night times days, plus travellers times daily spending per person times days, then the buffer percent. Per person equals trip total divided by travellers. Per day equals trip total divided by days. Flights are per person, the room is shared, daily spending is per person. No extra flight is added after that. Entry fees, where a guide states one, are shown separately on that guide and are not silently folded into the trip total.

What is excluded

Family size, housing ownership, pension income, remote income, employer benefits, retirement contributions, healthcare gaps, work permission, US tax filing obligations, and exchange-rate exposure are not in the calculators. A result is a scenario based on the inputs you entered, not a local market salary, not a job offer, and not guaranteed affordability. A short visit is not a move: work, study, retirement, or residence need a separate immigration route, with its own advice.

Verification status system

Each guide page states one of two statuses in its header. Fully sourced for the figures shown, with gaps listed in Sources, means the material official links for that page are present, and any remaining gaps are listed in its Sources section. Some official links still unverified, see Sources, means a material official link is missing or unverified, and the gap is stated on the page rather than filled with a guessed link.

Fully sourced in this release: New York to London, Boston to London, San Diego to Sydney, US passport to UK, Australia passport to UK, Australia passport to Japan, US passport to Japan, and UK passport to US.

Some official links still unverified in this release: San Francisco to Singapore, Los Angeles to Bangkok, Chicago to Toronto, Atlanta to Ho Chi Minh City, Houston to Hanoi, Denver to Da Nang, Denver to Tokyo, Canada passport to US, US passport to Thailand, UK passport to Thailand, US passport to Mexico, and UK passport to Australia.

Two corroborated rules are kept with their official sources: the Thailand 30-day tourist visa exemption from 15 September 2026, and the US ESTA fee of $40.62 from 16 October 2026. Thailand TDAC and e-Visa portal addresses remain flagged on their pages as not rendered in a direct text check, and are not presented as verified.

Future work, not built features

The following are recorded here as future work only. None of them is built in this release: arbitrary origin and destination selection, accounts, languages, affordability alerts, a personal affordability dashboard, a trip-to-relocation planner, saved planning milestones, daily news, a social network, an AI chatbot, 100 more pages, broader destination selection, retirement-income scenarios, and tax assumptions beyond the current user-entered effective-rate model.
