Australia passport to Japan: entry and scouting trip budget

The third ElsewhereMath question: what would it take to visit, and could that visit become a move? For an Australian passport holder, Japan is a visa-free short visit, with no pre-travel authorisation to buy first.

Last checked: 24 October 2026 · Route: Australia passport to Japan · Status: Local draft for coordinator review, not yet published or merged.

Apply here, nowhere else

For a short tourist visit, there is no visa application and no electronic authorisation application for an Australian passport holder. Use the official sources below to check that position, rather than paying a third-party site for a Japan visa or authorisation you do not need for this trip.

No official Visit Japan Web apply link is linked on this page, because no Visit Japan Web link was verified from an official government source during the 24 October 2026 check. Visit Japan Web is described in secondary summaries as an optional digital arrival and customs declaration service, not a visa or entry authorisation. If you use it, go to the official Japanese government service directly, not through a paid third-party site.

Entry checklist, short visit

  • No visa required, short stay: Australian citizens with an Australian passport do not need a tourist visa for a short-term stay of 90 days or less, for tourism, business meetings, conferences, or visiting family and friends, per the Consulate-General of Japan, Sydney page.
  • Fee: $0 for a visa for this short visit, because no visa is required. There is no ETA or ESTA-style fee to pay for this route in 2026.
  • Validity and stay: up to 90 days per visit under the visa exemption. The period actually granted is the landing permission given on arrival, so do not assume a longer stay is available, and leave before that period expires.
  • Passport: hold a valid Australian passport that remains valid for the duration of the stay, per the Sydney consulate page. Japan does not impose a separate 6-month passport validity rule in the secondary summaries checked, but airlines may apply their own boarding rules, so check with your airline as well.
  • Per-person requirement: the exemption applies per traveller, by nationality, not by Australian residency status. A non-Australian citizen travelling with you, even if they live in Australia, is judged on their own nationality, and may need a visa.
  • Paid work and longer stays need a visa: a visa is required for remunerated activities and for stays longer than the short-stay period, including working holiday and other long-term categories. Do not work, including paid work, on a Temporary Visitor landing permission.
  • Transit: because Australian passport holders are visa-exempt for short entry, a transit that involves entering Japan is covered by the same short-stay exemption for up to 90 days. For a connection that does not involve entering Japan, verify the exact transit case with your airline before travel, since airport transit rules can differ by airport and connection.
  • Arrival process: secondary summaries describe an arrival card and customs declaration on paper, or digitally through Visit Japan Web, plus photography and fingerprinting for foreign passport holders on entry. Visit Japan Web is optional in those summaries, not a visa substitute, and paper forms remain accepted. Verify the current arrival process on the official Japanese sources before travel.
  • Not a move: Temporary Visitor status does not give work or residence permission. Work, study, or living in Japan needs a separate immigration route, with its own advice.

Scouting trip budget, fixed maths

Flights are per person, the room is shared, daily spending is per person. Trip total is for all travellers, in Australian dollars. Per person is trip total divided by travellers, with no extra flight added. All flight and hotel figures below are editable examples, not sourced prices.

Entry total is travellers multiplied by entry fee, added after the buffer. Default is A$0, because no visa and no authorisation fee applies to this short visit.

Worked example, checked: 10 days, 2 travellers, A$1,200 flights per person, A$220 room per night, A$130 daily per person, 10% buffer, A$0 entry fee. Base is (2 x A$1,200) + (A$220 x 10) + (2 x A$130 x 10) = A$7,200. With buffer, A$7,920 total, A$792 per day, A$3,960 per person. Flight and hotel figures are examples only. From scouting trip to move

A scouting trip answers questions a calculator cannot: which city feels right, what the commute actually feels like, and whether Japan in winter, or in summer, is a place you want to live. If the trip goes well, the next step is a move comparison and immigration advice, not a longer visitor stay.

There is no exact Australia-origin move page on this site yet. Back to the prototype homepage for the current move pairs.

  • Consulate-General of Japan, Sydney, Who needs a visa page, opened directly 24 October 2026: Australian citizens, short-term stay 90 days or less, visa not required; long-term and work, visa required; exemption based on nationality, not Australian residency status; passport must remain valid during the stay.
  • Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs short-term visa exemption list, linked above as the official country list to check Australia on before travel.
  • Future JESTA timing (targeted 2028 financial year, not required in 2026 or 2027) and Visit Japan Web as an optional digital arrival service, from secondary summaries checked 24 October 2026, not verified on an official page in this check. Treat both as items to recheck on official Japanese sources before travel.
