The sourced starting points
Use these as a starting range, not as a single true price. Rent methods differ, and that difference matters more than any single average. Sydney rents are usually quoted weekly in Australia, so weekly figures are converted here at 52 weeks divided by 12 months.
| Item | San Diego | Sydney | Source and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom rent, per month | $1,975 median to $2,200 median, depending on the listing sample | About A$2,990 to A$3,616 per month, depending on method and location, about $2,093 to $2,531 at $0.70 | San Diego: Apartment List October 2026 Rent Report, 1-bedroom median $1,975, all sizes $2,317. PadMapper October 2026, 1-bedroom median $2,200 from its own listings as of 27 September 2026. Sydney: Domain June 2026 Rental Report, Sydney units median $780 per week, which is A$3,380 per month on a 52-week year, for units of all sizes, not 1-bedroom only. MadeComfy Greater Sydney report, NSW rental-bond medians for the June quarter annualised, 1-bedroom $35,880 per year, which is A$2,990 per month. Numbeo Sydney, updated 15 October 2026, crowd-sourced 1-bedroom city centre A$3,615.59, outside the centre A$2,504.40, from 172 entries over 18 months, so it is a weaker source than the other two. Do not pick one of these as the Sydney price. Pick the suburb and the listing type, then replace the range with listings you have actually seen. |
| Australia income tax, residents, 2026-27 | Tax-free threshold A$18,200. Then 15% from A$18,201 to A$45,000. Then 30% from A$45,001 to A$135,000. Then 37% from A$135,001 to A$190,000. Then 45% above A$190,000. Plus the 2% Medicare levy for most residents, which is separate from these bands. | Australian Taxation Office (ATO) 2026-27 resident rates, as enacted in the Treasury Laws Amendment (More Cost of Living Relief) Act 2025. The 15% rate replaced 16% on 1 July 2026. Non-resident rates are different, with no tax-free threshold, so get a personal calculation before you rely on any tax figure. The calculator below uses a single user-entered effective rate, not these bands. | |
| US tax, San Diego | No single rate is used here. Federal tax plus California tax both apply, and your effective rate depends on income, filing status, and deductions. | Enter your own effective tax rate in the calculator. Do not use a headline marginal rate as if it were your total tax. | |
| Healthcare, in one line | Mainly employer or private insurance in the US, with premiums, deductibles, and copays on top of tax. | Medicare is Australia's public system, funded in part by the 2% Medicare levy, but it is for eligible residents only, and most temporary visa holders from countries without a reciprocal agreement, including the US, are generally not eligible and need private cover. | This is a system difference, not a price. Budget for private cover in Sydney if you are not Medicare-eligible, and check eligibility on an official source before you rely on Medicare. |
Why the San Diego range is a range, not a contradiction: Apartment List and PadMapper both report medians, but from different listing samples and dates. An average from a small sample of advertised buildings would be higher again, because averages are pulled up by expensive listings. Use the median that matches your search, then replace it with real listings.
Try it: match your life, not just your salary
Sydney rent is entered in Australian dollars and converted at the editable exchange rate, so you can see the conversion instead of guessing it. Other Sydney costs are an example only, replace them with your own.
Formula, in plain words: take-home needed in Sydney equals Sydney monthly costs in dollars plus your current monthly cushion, divided by one minus your Sydney tax rate. This is illustrative maths, not a tax calculation. The ATO bands above are the check, not a substitute for a personal calculation. The result is in US dollars at the rate you entered. Divide it by that rate for the Australian-dollar equivalent.
Your result
Equivalent gross salary needed in Sydney, in US dollars at the rate entered
Worked example on the defaults above: take-home now about $6,967 per month, left after costs about $2,592 per month, Sydney rent about $2,366 per month, Sydney total costs about $4,186 per month, equivalent salary about $109,908 per year in US dollars, about A$157,012 at $0.70, and a savings difference of about $189 per month. Savings difference is San Diego monthly costs minus Sydney monthly costs in dollars. Positive means Sydney costs less on these inputs. It is not a savings forecast, because tax, healthcare, transport, and lifestyle are only partly in these fields.

Official links to check, not search results
Use these directly. If a site charges for tax information that the ATO gives free, or its address is not ato.gov.au for these services, treat it as a copycat and go back to the official link.
- ATO: 2026-27 resident tax rates, Treasury Laws Amendment (More Cost of Living Relief) Act 2025 - the enacted 2026-27 resident bands used on this page, 15%, 30%, 37%, 45%, with the A$18,200 tax-free threshold.
- ATO: What is the Medicare levy? - the 2% Medicare levy, how it is calculated, and reductions and exemptions.
No other official link is included on this page, because no other official government URL for this pair was verified from a search result or an official site check on 24 October 2026. In particular, no Medicare enrolment page and no visa page is linked here, so check eligibility and entry rules on an official government site before you rely on them.
What this page still does not do
- Family size: one-bedroom rent and a single-person budget do not scale cleanly to a family. A family version needs bedroom count, schooling, and childcare as separate fields.
- Housing ownership: buying, mortgage, and US property tax are not in this calculator. Renters only, for now.
- Pension and remote income: salary mode only on this page. Pension mode and remote-income mode are not yet built.
- Visa and residence: a short visit is not a move. There is no exact matching visa page for this pair in the locked 20-page cluster, so get immigration advice for work or residence permission instead of following an invented link.
